BMX Size Calculator
Freestyle BMX sizing is based on Top Tube Length (TT) in inches. Most adult freestyle riders use 20" wheels โ only the frame length changes.
โ ๏ธ Guide only. BMX sizing is highly personal. Many pros ride longer than recommended. Start with the chart size, then adjust based on feel.

FAQ โ BMX Sizing
What is Top Tube Length and why does it matter in BMX?
Top Tube (TT) length is the horizontal distance from the head tube to the seat tube โ it's the primary measurement for freestyle BMX frames. A shorter TT makes the bike easier to spin, whip and manual โ better for technical street tricks. A longer TT gives more stability on big transitions and at speed. It's measured in inches, and even a 0.25" difference significantly changes how the bike feels.
What's the difference between freestyle and race BMX sizing?
Freestyle BMX is sized purely by top tube length in inches โ there are no standardised size names, just the TT measurement. Race BMX uses named sizes (Micro Mini, Mini, Junior, Expert, Pro, etc.) which correspond to frame dimensions optimised for speed. Race bikes have longer wheelbases and are built for acceleration; freestyle bikes are more compact for trick ability. Both use 20" wheels for adults.
Should I buy the chart size or go longer like the pros?
For beginners, start with the chart recommendation โ it's the safest choice while you're learning. As you progress, many riders find they prefer a slightly longer frame (0.25"โ0.5" over chart size) for better flow and stability. This is especially true for vert, trails and big-air riding. For pure technical street tricks and flatland, staying at or below the chart size gives quicker response.
What does "Expert" mean in BMX racing โ do I need to be an expert?
No โ "Expert" is just a frame size label, not a skill level. BMX race frame names (Micro Mini, Mini, Junior, Expert, Expert XL, Pro, Pro XL) are universal sizing categories used by all manufacturers. An Expert-sized frame is simply the right physical size for riders around 148โ163 cm. The same applies to "Pro" โ it's a fit category, not a racing class requirement.
What size BMX for a 10-year-old?
It depends on height, not just age. A 10-year-old at 140 cm would typically fit an 18" wheel kids BMX or a race Expert size. A taller 10-year-old at 150+ cm might already be ready for a 20" full-size bike. Always measure height first and use the chart โ age alone is not reliable for BMX sizing.
Is BMX a good sport for younger kids?
Absolutely โ BMX racing in particular is one of the most family-friendly cycling sports, with competitive classes starting from age 4 (Micro Mini). It builds balance, coordination, confidence and fitness. The community is welcoming and most tracks offer beginner sessions. For freestyle, skate parks and pump tracks are ideal starting points for kids aged 6 and up.
