Parent's Buying Guide
- Never buy too big โ the #1 mistake parents make. An oversized bike is unsafe and hard to control.
- Height beats age โ always use height, not age, to find the right size.
- Feet on the ground โ for beginners, both feet should touch the ground flat. For confident riders, toes only.
- Test before buying โ let your child sit on the bike in the shop if possible.
- Budget for a helmet โ always buy a helmet at the same time. No exceptions.
- Expect to upgrade โ kids grow fast. A correctly-sized bike may only last 1โ2 years. That's normal.

FAQ โ Kids Bike Sizing
How do I measure my child's height correctly?
Stand your child against a wall in bare feet, heels touching the wall. Place a book flat on their head and mark the wall where the book spine touches. Measure from the floor to the mark. This gives you their exact height in cm. For inseam, have them stand straight and measure from the floor to the crotch.
Should I buy a bigger size so my child can grow into it?
No โ this is the most common and most dangerous mistake parents make. A bike that's too big is difficult to control, hard to brake safely, and can knock a child's confidence. Always buy the correct size for now. Children grow quickly and will need a new bike in 1โ2 years regardless โ that's completely normal.
What age is a 20 inch bike for?
A 20 inch bike typically suits children aged 6โ8 years, but height is more reliable than age. Children between 116โ128 cm tall will generally fit a 20 inch bike. Some taller 5-year-olds may need a 20 inch, while some smaller 8-year-olds may still be on a 16 inch. Always go by height first.
What is a balance bike and when should I get one?
A balance bike has no pedals โ your child propels themselves with their feet and learns to balance and steer. They're ideal for children aged 2โ4 (70โ100 cm tall). Research shows children who learn on balance bikes transition to pedal bikes much faster and with more confidence than those who use training wheels. Highly recommended as a first bike.
When should my child move to an adult bike?
Most children are ready for adult bike sizing from around 146โ150 cm tall (typically ages 11โ13). At this point, they can look at adult XS or S frames. Some brands also make specific youth or junior sizes in the 26 inch range as a transitional step. Our adult calculator covers heights from 148 cm upwards.
Do I need a specific bike for my child's first mountain bike?
For casual trail riding, a regular kids bike with wider tyres is fine. For more serious mountain biking, brands like Trek, Giant, Specialized and YT make dedicated kids MTB bikes with proper suspension and geometry. The 24 inch size is the sweet spot for junior mountain biking โ good enough for real trails, light enough for small riders.
